Even with the Matari/Amarr slave conflict its hard to get in any real way with the story line. Mostly we just play on top of what the background is. Its always been hard to get 'official' involvement. i.e. interaction with NPC corps.
For example, im sure PIE would love some interaction with thier Imperial Navy or somesuch. Or, in fact, im sure the freedom fighters, or even the Matari as a whole, would love some words from their goverment everynow and then. I mean, when a fleet of 150 ships turn up in orbit and protest about the slave trade, and seeing as how starship captains suposedly are famous and the elite. You'd kinda hope for, even a small level response, from a goverment official. So the players know that what they do has an effect on what happens in the universe. And thats the main gripe i feel. No matter how well thought out or organised an event you may consider is, the chances of having even the tiniest effect or response from npc people is null.
That being said, ive found the new news staff to be very helpful and always have their eye out for a story. They've been reporting alot more and its been really good. I just hope they continue ramping up the news output. So guys, if you got something you'd think make a good news story, and you've actually done something in game to support it, then id suggest mailing it in. You might be surprised.
Players getting their fingers dirty in the storyline is what i think the next step should really allow. Becuase i see alot of people getting fraustrated that nothing they do has any effect.
For example. It might be good to have a 'relations officer' for the various corps or diplomatic liasons etc for the NPC corps. And then these guys could post in the summit every now and then
For example.
Republic Parliment denounces minmatar freedom fighters as terrorists after pressure from the Amarrian goverment. (or refuses to etc)
Caladari Navy held a ceremony today giving out medals to the top pilots who have helped keep their borders clear of pirates (i.e. top caldari people who have killed the most pirates)
Amarrian parliment official recognises CVA's work in the lawless regions of Amarr space and grants them license to claim the space their in the name of the Empire.
The Gallentte public today vote in its 'Captain Awards' where the gallentte citizens vote for the top pod pilot captains in various categories. (and then you can have an awards ceremony - say 'Top Combat Pilot' - 'Best looking captain' - based upon the fact that pod captains are meant to be famous and people watch galnet in high numbers and gallentte strike me as a celebrity culture)

i mean, thats just stuff off the top of my head, but the potential is huge. The more you can get people into the storyline, the better in my opnion. I mean, cmon, its like a goldmine of content out thier. I can't believe CCP let it just sit there and not use it a hell of a lot more. -
